Breaking Radio Silence

Radio silence from the front lines of Filmweavers was finally broken last night to relay some important and very overdue updates.  Below is a partial transcript of that correspondence:

-There are rumors of a new DVD cover for The Penny coming from the direction of the film's blog and Facebook page.

-In even bigger news, it seems The Penny has secured a distribution contract!

(You can read more about both these and continuing stories on the film's semi-new blog over at: http://www.thepennyfilm.com/blog  Also, the film's Facebook page is another great way to stay even more up to date on the project - plus get chances to enter fun contests: http://www.facebook.com/thepennyfilm)

-Earlier this month Dustin and Ethan reportedly traveled to WI to meet up with Nathan and Micah for their annual Filmweavers business meetings.  Discussions ranged from boring topics such as taxes and paperwork, to more exciting things like future film projects, scripts, and even who would write these blog posts!

-Apparently another reason for the radio silence these past months has been certain members participation in other exciting film ventures.  Nathan has enjoyed spending a number of weeks down in warm and sunny TX working on the edit of Ace Wonder, a great looking family film from HeuMoore Productions (makers of The Widow's Might).  Ethan meanwhile (along with his wife Ashley) spent a couple months in VA working in the VFX department on the set of Alone, Yet Not Alone, a period piece from Advent Film Group.  Hopefully each of them can be talked into providing more descriptive accounts of their experiences here soon…

There was some more information included in the radio message deemed too sensitive to disclose at this time.  Things such as new story and film ideas being kicked around by the group.  Hopefully over the coming months those things too will be able to come to light.  The only way you'll know though is by staying tuned here for more "news from the front".

"The Penny" Wins Best Feature Award at SAICFF!!

(Micah, Nathan, and Dusty after the awards ceremony. -Photo courtesy of Peter Serven)

Our week down in Texas for the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival was an exciting one, culminating with the awards ceremony where "The Penny" was blessed to receive the Jubilee Award for "Best Feature Film"!!  Many of the cast and crew were down with us to celebrate as well, but unfortunately Ethan wasn't able to be there due to a schedule conflict with another film he is currently working on. We missed you man!

The screening of the film on Friday also marked the world premiere of "The Penny" and it was received very well.  The theater was packed to standing room only with over 600 people in the audience.  There was a second showing on Saturday as well with an even larger attendance!  Thank you to the many of you who came out to see it.

Meanwhile, we continue to work through the long road to distribution, whereby many more audiences will hopefully be able to see the film.  In the meantime we'll continue to post more pictures, videos, and updates on the film's website and Facebook page which can be found at: www.ThePennyFilm.com and www.facebook.com/thepennyfilm

Color Grading Complete!

Following closely on the heels of VFX completion, color grading for "The Penny" is complete!

What exactly is color grading you ask?  The picture above is a great example.  Color grading is a process where the original image is taken and enhanced to produce an even better looking picture.  Sometimes that just entails correcting a shot so that it matches those around it.  Other times it means adding a tint to the shot to help enhance the mood and feel of a particular scene (as in the example above).  Hopefully we can get Micah (our colorist) on here soon to explain a bit more of the process and his experiences grading "The Penny".

This also means that we are one step closer to a completed film!  The final element left is the sound mix which is being wrapped up over the next week.  You should be hearing more about that soon as well...

Penny VFX Completed!

The ongoing saga to complete a modern film generally entails the successful completion of some amount of visual effects work. The Penny is no exeption. While not a "VFX film" like Pendragon and others, it had a few of it's own unique visual effects enhancements which should go entirely unnoticed in the completed film. In the end there are over 140 effects shots, which we completed on a part time basis. The Penny has been on a long road, but as I understand it, we are literally a week from the finished film. Hold your breath guys!

The Homestretch

After the past months of radio silence some of you may be wondering if there is any life left over here at Filmweavers…and I'm happy to report there is!

This time has been filled with many different things.  One of those being my (Nathan) work on the Ace Wonder set.  Those of you following their blog know that the filming wrapped on schedule and was a big success.  The six weeks spent out in TN brought me many new friends and memories!

During my time out there I also kept an eye on the continued work on "The Penny" back home.  These past months have brought that project quite close to completion and we are now officially on the homestretch.  All indications point to a final version of the film being in hand by the end of the month!

The visual effects are all wrapped up and placed in the timeline with the exception of only two shots.  The entire film now has a color grade and only has some final tweaking and polishing to be done yet.  Last week I headed down to the sound studio for an updated viewing session of the sound mix and things are getting quite close on that front as well.

As these last few pieces fall into place I'll keep you updated on the progress and obviously the final completion.  Thank you to everyone for your continued interest in "The Penny"!  Filmmaking is a long slow process often compared to watching paint dry, but each of those tiny painstaking brushstrokes are worth it when the final canvas is revealed...
